Prosper: Serbia directly responsible for Mladic, but also for Karadzic if he is hiding in Serbia
BELGRADE, October 9 (FENA) – US Ambassador for War Crimes Issues Pierre Richard Prosper said that Belgrade is directly responsible for the arrest and transfer of Ratko Mladic to the Hague Tribunal, but that it also has to take responsibility for Radovan Karadzic if information showing that he is hiding in Serbia appears, Belgrade media reported on Saturday.

“As soon as Mladic is arrested it will be possible to start talks on the future of Serbia in Europe, as well as accession to the Partnership for Peace and NATO. We were always prepared for such discussion, but Mladic was in the way”, Prosper said.

After serving for almost four and a half years as the Ambassador for War Crimes Issues Prosper will move to a new post in California and until a new Ambassador is appointed he will be replaced by his deputy Dave Hutchinson.

“If information showing that Karadzic is in Serbia surfaces, that will change thinks. Serbia would then have to take responsibility for him as well. But, for the time being Mladic is the key for Serbia”, Prosper said.

He expressed hope that Belgrade will step up efforts this fall to “once and for all close the Mladic issue”.

About plans for ending the work of the Hague Tribunal, Prosper said that “its staff could possibly be reduced, but Karadzic, Mladic and Gotovina will stand trial before it either tomorrow, in 2008, 2010 or 2016”.

Prosper said that Washington is against stopping the search for indicted war criminal Croatian General Ante Gotovina and stressed that “Croatia needs to resolved the Gotovina issue before joining the EU”.

He also said that Gotovina needs to forget about the possibility of standing trial in Croatia.

About reports that he was in some way involved in talks on ensuring the surrender of Karadzic and Mladic, Prosper confirmed that he tried to encourage Karadzic to surrender and that he talked to his family to see “what they needed” in order for Karadzic to surrender.

“We tried something similar with Gotovina as well, but without success. I have tried nothing with Mladic because I did not have an opportunity, nor did I have the right person to work on that”, Prosper said.
