| Neum: Journalists and BiH officials visit "USS Mitscher" |
NEUM, October 16 (FENA) – A press conference was organized on Saturday on deck of USS Mitscher (DDG 57), who arrived in Neum as part of the ceremonies of marking the tenth anniversary of the Dayton Accords.
With the occasion the press was addressed by U.S. Ambassador to BiH Douglas McElhaney, Commander of Allied Forces South Admiral Harry Ulrich and BiH Presidency member Borislav Paravac.
Ambassador McElhaney said that this is the first visit of USS Mitscher to BiH and that this visit clearly indicates the dedication of the United States to this region, and especially BiH.
“The United States of America has been with this country since the signing of the Dayton Accords, which ended the terrible war. We have worked with the citizens of this country and great progress that has been realized exceeds the frameworks of the Agreement”, said McElhaney, adding that defense reform is already being implemented and that the news on police reform are encouraging.
He stressed that the next step is seen in considering what other reforms could contribute to efficiency of the BiH State, adding that a great deal of work still needs to be done in BiH.
“The most important thing is that the fugitives indicted by the ICTY are apprehended and this will happen, if not today, then tomorrow. As USS Mitscher, we do not give up, we do not forget”, underlined McElhaney.
Admiral Harry Ulrich stressed that it is difficult to imagine at this moment that it has been only ten years since warships such as this one were not far away from this coast in attempt to help end the terrible war.
“Thousands of sailors, soldiers, members of air forces truly dedicated a part of their lives to ending the terrible war in BiH”, said Ulrich and added that he expects the progress achieved over the past ten years to be continued in the future.
In his address, Borislav Paravac expressed satisfaction that the U.S. warship is visiting in BiH, noting that this visit represents a sign of U.S. recognition for everything achieved in the period of ten years since the Dayton Accords signing.
“We see this visit as a response to our gratitude to the United States, which has done a great deal for BiH, primarily in establishing peace, which prevented us from a humanitarian catastrophe, and in the enormous support provided for implementing reforms that will lead us to Euro-Atlantic integration", said Paravac.
Apart from the journalists, numerous BiH officials on Saturday have also visited USS Mitscher.
